Calatherm Expands Battery Thermal Management Portfolio with Launch of BTMS 2

Calatherm, a UK-based manufacturer specialising in vehicle thermal management systems, has expanded its battery thermal management offering with the launch of their new BTMS (Battery Thermal Management System) 2.

The introduction of BTMS 2 builds on the successful launch of the company’s BTMS 1 launch last year and reflects the increasing variety of requirements emerging across the electrified vehicle market.

Daniel Jackson, Business Development Director at Calatherm, explained: “With the launch of BTMS 2, we have been able to broaden our capability to support a wider range of electric vehicle applications across both on-highway and off-highway applications.”

Daniel continued, “The response to the launch of our first battery thermal management system was extremely positive, and the BTMS 2 has been no different, with significant interest surrounding its capabilities in a huge range of sectors. While there is no “one size fits all” solution, we are very excited about what our expanded BTMS capability can offer our current and future customers, working with them closely to develop a streamlined system that best supports their specific application and vehicle requirements.”

Calatherm position themselves as a tailored thermal management solutions provider for mobile vehicles, specialising in bespoke solutions for both occupants and vehicle sub-systems. Unlike standard off-the-shelf products, Calatherm’s BTMS solutions are typically engineered to suit the specific architecture, duty cycle and operating environment of each vehicle platform.

While BTMS 1 and BTMS 2 were originally developed for individual customer projects, they now provide a proven foundation that can be adapted for future applications with minimal modification. Where appropriate, they can also be supplied as ready-to-deploy systems, with software control strategies tailored to match the operational demands of each vehicle.

The two systems offer different thermal management capabilities depending on application requirements. The existing BTMS 1 is a combined heating and cooling system, delivering up to 6 kW of cooling and 7 kW of heating, with an integral water heater designed to maintain battery performance in colder environments. It can also incorporate optional passive cooling through an external radiator pack.

By comparison, the newly launched BTMS 2 is a cooling-only system rated up to 6 kW, designed for applications where battery heating is not required. By focusing purely on cooling performance, BTMS 2 offers a simpler and more streamlined solution while still supporting both active and passive cooling through a separate radiator pack.

Together, the two systems demonstrate Calatherm’s flexible approach to battery thermal management, enabling solutions to be selected or adapted depending on the thermal demands of each vehicle platform.

Calatherm’s BTMS solutions are suitable for a wide range of electric vehicle applications, including commercial and municipal vehicles, construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and bus and coach platforms. These sectors often operate under demanding duty cycles and challenging environmental conditions, where effective battery thermal management is critical for maintaining performance, efficiency and battery longevity.

Daniel concluded: “With the addition of BTMS 2, Calatherm continues to strengthen its ability to support OEMs with scalable, adaptable thermal management systems as electrification expands across the commercial vehicle and off-highway industries.”
